If you and your partner have decided a plunge pool is worth the investment, the next question is usually the practical one: can we actually get it into the garden, and what does the ground underneath need to look like? These are sensible worries, and they are far easier to answer before you commit than after a deposit has changed hands. This guide walks through access, groundwork and the installation process itself, so both of you can picture the day realistically rather than hoping it all works out.

We will be straight about where costs and complications tend to appear. A plunge pool is a five-figure decision, and the installation is a genuine part of that figure, not an afterthought.

First, what kind of plunge pool are you installing?

The installation route depends heavily on the type of pool, so it helps to be clear on terms first.

An above-ground plunge pool sits on top of a prepared surface, much like a hot tub or swim spa. It is delivered as a single rigid shell or unit and craned or manoeuvred into position. This is usually the simpler installation.

A below-ground (in-ground) plunge pool is set into an excavated hole so the water level sits at or near ground level. This involves genuine construction work: digging, drainage, sometimes a concrete surround. It looks the most seamless and often adds the most to a property, but it is the bigger project.

There are hybrids too, such as partially sunken pools, where the shell is dropped into a shallow excavation. Knowing which route you are choosing changes almost everything else below, so pin this down early with your supplier.

Access: getting the pool from the road to the garden

This is the single most common thing people underestimate, so it is worth spending real time on.

Measure the tightest point, not the average

Delivery teams need a clear route from where the delivery lorry can park to where the pool will sit. The route is only as wide as its narrowest point. A side passage, a gate, an archway or a tight corner between the house and a boundary wall can all be the pinch point that decides whether a pool goes in easily, goes in by crane, or does not go in at all.

Measure the width and height of every gap on the route, and note any steps, slopes or soft ground. Then compare that against the shell’s dimensions when it is on its transport frame, which is often wider and taller than the pool itself.

When a crane comes in

If the route to the garden is blocked, for example by the house itself or a narrow terraced access, the answer is often a crane lift over the roof or over a boundary. Cranes are routine for this kind of work, but they add cost and require planning: the crane needs a stable, level base to set up on, and the flight path over the property needs to be clear of cables and trees.

Crane hire is a variable cost worth asking about specifically. It can run from several hundred to a few thousand pounds depending on reach and duration, so get it quoted rather than assumed.

Practical access checks to do this week

  • Where will the delivery lorry realistically stop, and is that a public road with parking restrictions?
  • Is the ground along the route firm enough to move heavy equipment across, or is it lawn that will churn?
  • Are there overhead obstructions: cables, gutters, low branches?
  • Does a neighbour’s land need crossing, and if so, have you asked them?

Groundwork: what goes underneath matters most

The base is what keeps your pool level, stable and safe for years. Getting it wrong is expensive to correct, so this is not the place to save money.

For an above-ground plunge pool

A full plunge pool of water is extremely heavy. Even a compact pool holds thousands of litres, and water weighs roughly one tonne per cubic metre. That load has to be carried by a base that will not settle, crack or shift.

The usual requirement is a reinforced concrete pad, level and cured, sized to the manufacturer’s specification. Some lighter units can sit on compacted aggregate or reinforced paving, but always follow what the supplier states rather than assuming a patio will do. Ask for the base specification in writing before you build anything.

For a below-ground plunge pool

This is genuine groundworks. Expect excavation, spoil removal (getting rid of the soil you dig out, which is often a surprising volume), a concrete base, and backfilling around the shell once it is set. Drainage is critical here, both around the pool and for the surrounding area, so that groundwater does not push against or lift the shell.

Ground conditions drive a lot of the cost and uncertainty at this stage. Clay, high water tables, rock, sloping sites or made-up ground can all add work. This is the part of the project where a clear, itemised quote genuinely protects you, because it is where surprises tend to hide.

Services: power, water and drainage

A plunge pool needs a filtration and, in most cases, a heating and circulation system, all of which need power. Heated pools in particular often need a dedicated electrical supply installed by a qualified electrician. In England, fixed electrical work in a garden falls under Part P of the Building Regulations, which means it should be carried out or certified by a competent registered electrician. Ask your supplier and your electrician who is responsible for this so it does not fall between the two.

You will also need a way to fill the pool and, importantly, a way to drain and discharge water when you empty it for maintenance. Plan where that water will go: a soakaway or foul drain, not simply across a neighbour’s boundary.

Do you need planning permission or building regulations approval?

For most domestic plunge pools in an ordinary residential garden in England, a pool itself is not usually a structure that requires planning permission, as it is often treated similarly to other garden works. However, this is genuinely situation-dependent, and there are real exceptions:

  • If your property is listed, or in a conservation area, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or similar, additional consents may apply.
  • Any enclosure, building or shelter you put over or around the pool can trigger its own permitted development limits.
  • Building regulations may apply to associated works such as the electrical supply and, in some cases, structural elements.

Because the rules turn on your specific property and location, the honest answer is: check with your local planning authority before you commit. A quick pre-application query is far cheaper than getting it wrong. We would not want to claim a blanket exemption that might not apply to your particular garden.

What a typical installation day (or week) looks like

For an above-ground pool with good access, installation can be quick: the base is prepared in advance and cured, the unit is delivered and positioned, services are connected, and the pool is filled and commissioned. This can be a day or two of on-site work once the base is ready.

For a below-ground pool, think in weeks rather than days. Excavation, base construction, curing time, shell placement, backfilling, drainage, surrounding surfaces and commissioning are separate stages, and concrete in particular needs time to cure properly before loading. A realistic timeline from first dig to first swim is often several weeks, weather permitting.

Build in a little slack. British weather, ground surprises and lead times on the shell itself all mean the neat schedule on paper rarely survives entirely intact.

Questions to ask your supplier before you sign

Bring these to the conversation so both decision-makers feel confident:

  • Is the base or groundwork included in the quote, or is it my responsibility to arrange?
  • Have you assessed my actual access route, and is a crane likely?
  • What exactly is the base specification, in writing?
  • Who arranges and certifies the electrical supply?
  • What is the realistic total, including delivery, crane, groundwork and commissioning, not just the pool price?
  • What is the timeline, and what happens if ground conditions differ from expected?

The honest summary

A plunge pool is very installable in most English gardens, but the smooth ones are the ones where access and groundwork were checked properly beforehand. The pool price on the website is rarely the whole story, and the installation is where the difference between a comfortable investment and an unwelcome surprise usually sits.

If one of you is focused on the wellness benefit and the other on the practicalities and cost, that is exactly the right split. Work through access, base and services together, get everything itemised in writing, and you can commit to the fun part with genuine confidence.
